IBS performs nutritional management services at the Cooplaf Leite Project

Updated: Jun 2, 2022

Between April and May, the BioSistêmico Institute (IBS) carried out the first round of nutritional management assistance to the properties that are part of the Cooplaf Leite Project, in the region of the municipality of Terenos, Mato Grosso do Sul.

In this first round, a survey was carried out on the composition of the herd (animal categories and quantities within the property), the forage inventory (pasture areas and forage production areas). In the consultations, we sought to highlight the importance of prior forage planning.

According to agronomist Tibério Paccola, an IBS consultant who performed the nutritional management services, the receptivity of the producers was excellent in this first phase.

“The producers are very interested in what can be applied to improve the property and most of them shared the problems they faced so that we could discuss solutions”, says Tibério.

The IBS consultant states that the assistance provided by the Cooplaf Leite Project is important to awaken in producers the need for a more professional management of the activity and demonstrate the advantages of this management.

“All the areas that are being worked on in the project have their importance and are interconnected. Nutrition, for example, corresponds to a high percentage of the total daily costs on the property and has an influence on increasing milk production and productivity, as well as on animal reproduction”, he highlights.

Tibério adds that a balanced nutrition of the animals makes it possible to explore all the genetic potential of the animal's production and has an influence on the composition and quality of the milk produced.

The most immediate recommendations were related to adjustments in pasture management and implementation and adaptation of forage production areas for dry periods, in addition to adjustments in stocking, number of animal units per unit area of the property. In each property, some specific problems were also addressed, as identified at the time of the visit.

About the project The project was conceived by IBS with the main objective of promoting the developmentof dairy farming with the members of the Cooperativa Agrícola Mista da Pecuária de Corte e Leiteira e da Agricultura Familiar (Cooplaf), an entity based in the municipality of Terenos, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in the Midwest region of Brazil.

The initiative is supported by resources from the Zoetis Foundation and the Brazilian Support Service for Micro and Small Enterprises (Sebrae) in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. It also receives institutional and academic support from Unimar – University of Marília.
