The second round of consultations on good practices in dairy farming is underway in
the Cooplaf Leite Project, in settlements in the Terenos/MS region. The team of
consultants from Instituto BioSistêmico (IBS) started the visits on July 4th and should
conclude assistance to the 100 properties that make up the project until July 16th.
At this stage, IBS consultants perform a second diagnosis based on the CheckMilk
methodology, which was inspired by the guide to good sustainable milk practices by
the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International
Milk Federation (FIL). There are 160 check questions in six major areas: milking
health and hygiene, animal welfare, socioeconomic issues and environmental
issues.
The first diagnosis of good practices of the Cooplaf Leite Project was carried out in
March. In this second round, the guidelines are reinforced according to the action
plan of each property and the changes implemented in the last months are verified
based on the assistance provided by the IBS teams in the project.
“As Mato Grosso do Sul is going through a period of drought, we have reinforced
guidelines for producers so that they can manage the animals in the best possible
way. They need to be attentive to the nutrition and health of the herd so that the
animals can go through this period of food deprivation”, highlights veterinarian
Matheus Henrique Magalhães, who has been working in the diagnosis of good
practices.
About the project
The Cooplaf Leite Project was conceived by the Instituto BioSistêmico with the main
objective of promoting the development of dairy farming among the cooperative
members of the Cooperativa Agrícola Mista da Pecuária de Corte e Leiteira and
Agricultura Familiar (Cooplaf), an entity headquartered in the municipality of
Terenos, in state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in the Center-West region of Brazil.
Executed by IBS, the initiative has the support of resources from the Zoetis
Foundation and the Brazilian Support Service for Micro and Small Enterprises
(Sebrae) in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. It also receives institutional and
academic support from Unimar – University of Marília.
This is another livestock project carried out by the Instituto BioSistêmico that uses
the CheckMilk methodology, which has a platform with a management system and
application for technical teams and producers. The system facilitates project
management and the application helps the producer on a daily basis, as an
extension of the IBS consultancy that can be accessed at any time in the palm of the
hand.
